This page describes how the writing on holdoutdays.com is produced. It exists so that a reader can judge the text by its method rather than by its confidence.
What we are trying to do
Write plainly about leaving home at short notice for people who are not specialists, in a way that is useful on an ordinary day and still accurate. The test we apply to a draft is whether a reader can do something differently after reading it. Articles that fail that test get shortened or dropped.
Where the material comes from
Our starting points are the published materials of the organisations whose job the subject is: civil protection and emergency management agencies, fire services, public health authorities, utilities, veterinary and animal welfare bodies, consumer organisations and insurers. Where their guidance differs between countries — and on this subject it frequently does — we say so rather than presenting one country's rule as a universal one.
We write from understanding rather than by paraphrase. Sources are read, then set aside, then the article is written; what cannot be explained without the source open in another window does not belong on the page.
How we handle numbers
Every figure on this site has to survive one question: can it be supported? If it can, it is stated. If the order of magnitude is well established but a precise figure is not, we attribute the point to the kind of body that measures it rather than inventing precision.
So we write that health authorities consistently warn that carbon monoxide causes deaths, rather than publishing a death toll we cannot source. The second version reads more forcefully and is worth less.
What we do not publish
- Guarantees, promised outcomes, or any suggestion that preparation removes risk.
- Invented statistics, invented experts, invented testimonials, or quotations nobody said.
- Manufactured urgency: countdowns, scarcity, "act now", or a crisis used as a sales argument.
- Imitations of official warnings, emergency alerts, news bulletins or government communications.
- Individual medical, legal, financial or insurance advice, which we are not qualified to give.
- Material addressed to people who are in an emergency at the moment of reading, which belongs with the services responding to it.
- Content about weapons, explosives, or techniques whose main use is to cause harm.
Review and dating
Pages carry a review date. They are revisited periodically and whenever something relevant changes in the guidance we rely on. A revision that changes the substance of a recommendation is noted on the page; a typographical fix is not.
Corrections
We would rather be corrected than consistent. If something here is wrong, out of date, unclear or unsupported, write to corrections@holdoutdays.com with the page, the passage and what you believe the position to be. We read every one of these.
Where a correction is warranted, we make it and update the review date. Where a point is genuinely contested, we say that it is contested instead of choosing a side for the sake of a cleaner sentence.
Independence
Commercial relationships do not influence editorial judgement. No advertiser or affiliate partner reviews an article before publication, and no payment buys a recommendation. The Advertising Policy sets this out in detail.
Authorship
Articles are written and reviewed by the publisher's own editorial work, identified on the About page. We do not publish under invented author names or invented credentials, and we do not attribute text to experts who have not seen it.
